Conway Twitty Biography

Conway Twitty had more #1 hits than any other artist in any genre. How many did Conway Twitty have? Counting all songs that reached #1 in any of the several major music trade magazines that published singles charts, the number generally quoted is 54. Conway Twitty played Country music in high school in West Helena, Arkansas, but late in his tour of military duty he heard Elvis and said, "I can do that!" In 1958 Conway Twitty signed with MGM Records, came to Nashville and recorded "It's Only Make Believe," a huge hit that launched a pop career that gave him five years of hits. A few years later Conway signed with Decca and began a long unbroken string of Country hits, including "Hello Darlin'," "You've Never Been This Far Before," "I'd Love To Lay You Down," "I Don't Know A Thing About Love," and more hits too numerous to mention. On the strength of powerful vocals and carefully chosen material, Conway Twitty stayed on top year after year, prevailing even when radio tried to believe he'd been around too long. Dubbed "The Best Friend a Song Ever Had," Conway Twitty is one of the very top artists in the field of Country music. Conway Twitty's sudden death in 1993 stunned the entire Country music world.
